How do you win the Jackie Robinson Scholarship?
Professional second baseman Jackie Robinson became the first African American to play in Major League Baseball during the modern era and is still impacting the lives of minority students everywhere today. Jackie Robinson Scholars are exposed to financial and time management workshops, internships, and potential employers post graduation (Not to mention FREE scholar dollars to apply towards their education). We sat down with Vincent Roofe, Junior Electrical Engineering Major from Chicago attending Howard University, to get a first hand account of what was necessary to successfully apply, how this scholarship has been beneficial beyond the ANNUAL scholarship check, and some advice to help the next scholar collect his or her bag!
The Jackie Robinson Foundation gives a designated amount of scholarship money annually to each recipient for four years. In order to benefit from the Jackie Robinson Scholarship, high school seniors are required to submit essays and complete an interview that demonstrates merit and financial need. Beyond the literal dollar amount, this foundation also uses the scholar's major to pair them with corporate sponsors and host various events that produce a strong network for the student.
